Just before Christmas we learned the sad news of the death, at the age of 97, of Mr Alfie Martin DFC. Alfie will be known to most of our former pupils as he visited the P7 classes each year to talk about his war-time memories and experiences. The children were enthralled by his stories and he, in turn, was always impressed by their enthusiasm and by the warmth of his welcome. Alfie joined the Army in September 1939 before transferring to the RAF, where he served as a navigator with Bomber Command. Shot down over Belgium in 1943, he escaped occupied Europe, narrowly avoiding capture on many occasions. We were honoured to have had Alfie as a friend of Downshire and his death leaves a space that can never be filled.
